Snow and Cold. What does it mean for your concrete project?

One of the most common questions for Kansas City homeowners about pouring concrete in cold weather is: "How cold is too cold?"

According to the American Concrete Institute (ACI), cold weather for concrete occurs when:

  • The average daily temperature is less than 40°F (5°C)

  • The air temperature does not exceed 50°F (10°C) for more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period

When temperatures drop below these thresholds, extra precautions are essential to ensure your concrete sets and cures properly, achieving long-term strength and durability.

Welcome back to Kansas City with a snap of cold and more snow! What’s one or two more snow days for these kids on top of the 6 we have already had!?

It’s no secret that precipitation and cold weather have big impacts on all construction projects timelines, especially in the concrete world. Let’s review some of the variables, impacts, and options for overcoming these difficulties with a knowledgeable concrete contractor.

Pouring Concrete in Cold Weather

One of the most common questions about pouring concrete in cold weather is: "How cold is too cold?" In Kansas City we know the weather is incredibly unpredictable. From 50 degrees one day to -10 degrees the next, there is no such thing as consistency here.

Why Cold Weather Affects Concrete

Concrete requires heat to set and cure effectively. Cold weather slows down the chemical reaction of hydration, which hardens the concrete. If concrete freezes before it has gained enough strength, it can weaken and lead to cracking or surface failure.

Tips for Pouring Concrete Successfully in Cold Weather

  1. Prepare the Site Properly

    • Clear snow, ice, and frost completely from the work area.

    • Never pour concrete on frozen ground, as it will thaw unevenly, leading to settling issues and cracks.

  2. Timing Is Everything

    • Schedule the pour for early morning to take advantage of the day's sunlight.

  3. Use a Low Slump and Minimal Water-to-Cement Ratio

    • Less water in the mix reduces the risk of freezing and shortens the set time.

  4. Add Accelerators to Speed Up the Set Time

    • Use products like SpeedSet or calcium chloride (no more than 2% by weight of cement) to accelerate curing.

  5. Use Heated or Insulated Mixes

    • Request a heated mix from your concrete supplier if possible.

  6. Insulate the Concrete

    • Use concrete curing blankets to keep the concrete warm and maintain optimal curing temperatures.

    • Keep the concrete from freezing for at least 3 to 7 days depending on weather conditions.

  7. Pre-Warm Embedded Materials

    • Ensure rebar, wire mesh, and other embedded items are above freezing temperature before placement.

  8. Avoid Premature Finishing

    • Do not start finishing operations until all bleed water has evaporated.

  9. Consider Heated Enclosures

    • Set up temporary heated enclosures when necessary.

    • If using combustion heaters, ensure proper ventilation to prevent carbonation damage to the concrete surface.

  10. Waterproof and Seal the Surface

  • Use a waterproof concrete sealer as a curing compound rather than traditional water curing methods.

**** Avoid De-Icing Salts on Fresh Concrete ****

  • De-icing salts can corrode the surface, allowing water to penetrate, freeze, and crack the concrete. Instead, use sand or non-corrosive traction aids.

Know when it’s time to re-schedule or delay

If extreme cold weather persists, professional contractors may also implement ground-heating techniques or delay the project for optimal weather conditions. Proper planning ensures a stronger and more durable final product. The worst thing a contractor or homeowner can do is rush the project in poor conditions creating instant issues with the durability, appearance, and overall quality. Even in circumstances where it looks good at first, there can be delayed defects that cause early cracking, chipping, fragility, and other major problems.

By following these best practices, you can confidently pour concrete in cold weather and achieve professional-quality results. At A Cutt Above Concrete we know how to work with, in, and around cold weather to ensure you get the quality outcome you expect with your project. Make sure whoever you select for your home project gives the same level of knowledge and service!

Stamped concrete patios have become increasingly popular due to their ability to mimic the appearance of more expensive materials such as natural stone, brick, or wood. Here are just a few reasons why this choice is ideal for homeowners in the Kansas City area:

  • Cost-Effective Elegance: Achieve the luxurious look of high-end materials without the hefty price tag.

This was another busy week for us over here in the beginnings of our 2025 season. Personal travel out to California had me away for a couple of days, but we were still taking calls and setting appointments for those upcoming projects needed before Spring and Summer hit. During the time on the way back to Kansas City I wanted to hit on Stamped Concrete and why I love the finished product so much. You’ll even find a beautiful stamped and colored concrete patio in my own backyard that my family absolutely loves to spend time on together. Why Homeowners Should Consider Stamped Concrete Patios

As homeowners seek ways to elevate their outdoor living spaces, one standout option is a stamped concrete patio. This versatile and aesthetically pleasing solution offers numerous benefits, including durability, customization, and a high-end look that can transform any backyard into an oasis.

The Advantages of Stamped Concrete Patios

Stamped concrete patios have become increasingly popular due to their ability to mimic the appearance of more expensive materials such as natural stone, brick, or wood. Here are just a few reasons why this choice is ideal for homeowners in the Kansas City area:

  • Cost-Effective Elegance: Achieve the luxurious look of high-end materials without the hefty price tag. Let your imagination run wild as there are stamps of all size, pattern, and texture to deliver incredible results!

  • Durability: Stamped concrete is built to withstand that unpredictable midwest weather, from scorching summers to freezing winters. No risk of stones moving over time, having to re-fill paver lock joints, or all sorts of other issues that come with loose stone installation.

  • Low Maintenance: Compared to natural stone or wood, stamped concrete requires less upkeep and lower costs, making it a practical option for busy homeowners who are looking to get the most for their money.

  • Design Flexibility: Choose from a wide range of patterns, colors, and textures to match your home’s aesthetic.

The Process of Installing Stamped Concrete

Curious about what goes into creating a stunning stamped concrete patio? Here’s a general overview of the process:

  1. Site Preparation: We begin by assessing and preparing the area where the patio will be installed. This includes excavation, leveling, and the placement of a sturdy base.

  2. Forming: Wooden or metal forms are set up to define the shape and boundaries of the patio.

  3. Pouring Concrete: High-quality concrete is mixed and poured into the prepared area. If the entire pour is the same color this is where we would add color options to your mix. Benefits of color adding in the truck is to ensure if the concrete is the same color throughout and will maintain the same appearance for the life of the structure.

  4. Stamping: While the concrete is still wet, stamps with the chosen pattern are carefully pressed into the surface. This step requires precision to ensure a consistent and realistic appearance.

  5. Color Application: Integral color is mixed into the concrete, and additional color hardeners may be applied to enhance the look.

  6. Sealing: Once the concrete has cured, a high-performance sealer is applied to protect the surface and enhance its appearance.

Achieving a High-End Appearance

One of the greatest advantages of stamped concrete is its ability to deliver a high-end look that rivals natural materials. Whether you prefer the rustic charm of flagstone, the clean lines of brick, or the warm texture of wood, stamped concrete can achieve your desired aesthetic. The wide range of color and pattern options ensures that your patio will be a unique and stylish addition to your home. The return on investment to home owners choosing a colored and stamped concrete patio is 80% -100% vs standard broom finish concrete. Stamped patios are known to add up to 10% to an overall home's value compared to 5% for standard concrete.

To assist our audience further and in the name of providing some educational content for all we wanted to make sure you know what to look for in a concrete contractor. When it comes to transforming your outdoor space or investing in high-quality concrete work, choosing the right contractor is crucial. In the Kansas City area, the market is filled with options, but not all contractors deliver the same level of craftsmanship and service. To help you make an informed decision, here are the top five things you should look for when selecting a concrete contractor.

1. Experience and Expertise

Concrete work requires skill, precision, and knowledge. Look for contractors with a proven track record and years of experience in both residential and commercial projects. Experienced contractors can handle complex designs, such as stamped and colored concrete, while ensuring structural integrity.

At A Cutt Above Concrete, our crews are led by foremen with over 10 years of experience in residential and industrial concrete. We specialize in creating stunning backyard transformations that stand the test of time. Although our company name is relatively new, our crews are highly experienced!

2. Portfolio of Past Projects

A reputable contractor will have a portfolio showcasing their previous work. This gives you a sense of their capabilities, attention to detail, and design versatility. Look for projects similar to what you envision for your property. Identify “likes'“ and “dislikes” of the example projects to ensure clear understanding of your vision.

Browse our portfolio at A Cutt Above Concrete to see examples of beautifully crafted stamped and colored concrete projects, as well as our other concrete services that have delighted homeowners throughout Kansas City.

3. Positive Customer Reviews and References

Word of mouth and online reviews provide valuable insights into a contractor’s reliability, professionalism, and quality of work. Don’t hesitate to ask for references and check google for customer reviews and feedback. Be sure to not only look at the most recent and top reviews, but also look for those less than favorable reviews. If anything is concerning or similar to your projects work scope ask additional questions for clarification and understanding.

We take pride in our reputation for outstanding customer service and craftsmanship. Our clients appreciate the care we put into every project, and we’re happy to provide references upon request. Our Google reviews speak for themselves and continue to showcase the level of customer service and quality work that we provide.

4. Clear Communication and Transparency

Effective communication is essential for a smooth project. Choose a contractor who listens to your needs, provides clear timelines and estimates, and keeps you informed throughout the process. More so, seek out a contractor that you feel you had a strong connection with during your discovery process. Understanding your budget, desired outcome, and overall vision is key in ensuring a smooth process from start to finish.

At A Cutt Above Concrete, we prioritize and excel in transparency and open communication from the initial consultation to the final walkthrough. Our goal is to make your experience as seamless and stress-free as possible.

5. Licensed, Insured, and Guaranteed Work

Protect your investment by selecting a contractor who is fully licensed and insured for the level of work required. Most residential projects in the Kansas City area do not require GC licensing, but insurance should always be carried and inspected before moving forward with your contractor. Additionally, ask about warranties or guarantees on their work to ensure long-term peace of mind.

We are fully licensed and insured, offering high-quality craftsmanship backed by our commitment to excellence. Long term satisfaction is our primary goal at A Cutt Above Concrete.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right concrete contractor can make all the difference in the success of your project. By focusing on experience, portfolio, customer reviews, communication, and proper qualifications, you can ensure your investment is in good hands.

In the name of transparency and giving others some insight into both concrete and small business ownership I wanted to blog with you as we launch this small business and take you along for the journey of our projects. My name is Tyler Honeycutt, owner and founder of A Cutt Above Concrete. I will be providing insight into the back story to this company, the motivation to create a new concrete experience in the Kansas City area, our vision and promises to our customers, as well how we go about creating some awesome projects for our customers.

The drive to create “A Cutt Above Concrete” came from my experience interacting with multiple local concrete companies in 2022 when I explored the idea of building a new stamped patio in my own backyard in Blue Springs. Not wanting something simple, plain, or basic, I opted to explore colored and stamped concrete options with fire pit area and retaining wall. This experience was less than idea from start to finish and I thought “with everything I know about customer service and sales there is a much better experience to be offered here”. The communication wasn’t always professional, the “big guys” didn’t seem interested in an 800sqft project, and the pricing/quotes/estimates were all over the place without a lot of transparency behind what was in them. Why was the concrete and hardscape experience like this? How can I help avoid others being treated or dealing with the same customer service downfalls? Insert business idea to elevate the customer experience in the concrete and hardscape space with a small local company, A Cutt Above Concrete.

During this idea generation time I was still working as Sr. Sales Manager with T-Mobile and although the idea of launching this company was on my mind, the timing wasn’t right in 2022. Fast forward 2 years later… The corporate environment had started to take its’ toll and the idea of this business venture wouldn’t go away. Boom! November 2024 I took the leap and began building out the bones of A Cutt Above Concrete. You might think “Wow, big change going from T-Mobile and managing 160 employees in sales to a small concrete contractor!” and you would be absolutely right. However, the knowledge, experience, and expertise of operating a large sales organization for our countries biggest wireless carrier has provided me with a deep understanding of what customer’s want, need, and deserve in their buying experiences and their finished products. This elevated customer experience initiative paired with beautiful workmanship is what is setting A Cutt Above Concrete apart from the rest.

Our team is made up of experienced professionals that all have over 10 years in concrete and hardscape. Their knowledge of all things concrete paired with the customer service vision to exceed all expectations pairs beautifully to deliver the best experience you’ll ever have with a contractor on your home projects. There is one goal when we leave your home that we have in mind, leaving you with a “wow” moment where you look back and think how simple, well communicated, transparent, and beautiful your project was and is. Leaving your property looking better than before, with minimal trace of our work, and with money left in your back account to start looking toward that next vision. This is the heart and soul to A Cutt Above Conrete’s mission.

I’ll continue to post in here regularly for anyone interested in following along. Follow us on our socials, check us out on google, and share away to help support a small business!

Until next time,

Tyler H.
